About Hannah Karpilowimg_4920

I have worked in the field of Personal Assistance Services since 1981, first as a home-care attendant referred through the Disabled Students’ Program at UC Berkeley, and through word of mouth. I began working in the UCB Residence Program in 1983, and worked there until 1996, teaching Independent Living Skills to students with disabilities in a dorm setting. During this time, from 1986 until 1991, I also worked with the Emergency Services Program (now Easy Does It) under several contractors, as an on-call attendant and then co-director. I have worked as Attendant Referral Coordinator for Center for Independent Living and Registry Specialist for the Alameda County Public Authority for IHSS. I have trained home care workers at several Adult Schools in Alameda County, and with the Public Authority for IHSS. I have also participated in training home care recipients with the Public Authority and Alta Bates Disability Community Health Clinic. I have participated in efforts to improve the IHSS system both at the table with policy makers and in the streets in direct action. This experience illustrates my deep commitment and passion for working in the Independent Living Movement and supporting home care workers as well as the consumers.
